Choosing the Healthiest Salt

Like you, many decades ago I replaced conventional table salt that contains toxic additives such as stearate and aluminum anti-caking agents, and is dried at over 1200 degrees F which alters the natural chemical structure of the sodium chloride.

In 2018 however, a research study found that all 12 brands of natural sea salt as well as mined salt that they tested had microplastics in them. These included Celtic Sea Salt, Utah Sea Salt, and Himalayan Rock Salt. In 2019 a more extensive study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology reported that after testing 39 different salts, only 3 were found to be free from microplastics.

The Toxic Effects of Microplastics

The problem with microplastics—synthetic plastic particles between 0.1 and 5 mm in length derived from petrochemicals—do not degrade but bioaccumulate in our bodies over the years. These tiny polyethylene particles not only chronically stress the immune system, but also contribute to reproductive and developmental toxicity in children. Further, these plastic polymers are hydrophobic and adsorb toxic chemicals from the environment such as phthalates and bisphenol A. In the body when the microplastics in salt “desorb” and release these well-established endocrine disruptors they not only play havoc with our hormones, but also can imbalance the gut microbiome and impair brain and neurological development and functioning.

The Solution

Recently however, a 2023 study published in Science Direct reported that there is a truly non-toxic alternative, Vera Salt, named from the Latin word “vērus” meaning “true, real, and genuine,” where the word “veracity” also derives from meaning “truthful” and “genuine.” This relatively new salt company sources its salt not from microplastic-contaminated ocean waters or from mountainous rocky terrain, but from an underground aquifer that feeds a brine spring rich in natural minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Vera Salt, derived from this pristine saline spring in the foothills of Spain at over 2000 feet above sea level, is quite pure since it is far from industrial pollution and contamination. Further, not only is this salt tested by independent third-party labs to be free of microplastics, it also has tested consistently superiorly over other brands for me and my patients using my energetic testing method, Matrix Reflex Testing (MRT). 

This Vera Salt company seems to have done everything right. It is harvested by hand using traditional methods, and not subject to any modern processing or bleaching methods. Three of their forms of salt come in glass containers and the fine salt comes in a plastic baggie made of biodegradable potato starch. Further, they utilize a smooth-gliding ceramic grinder that leaves no unwanted plastic pieces or chips behind during the grinding process.
